Two Contests nominated for European Yacht of the Year

Contest Yachts in the Netherlands has had not one but two of its boats nominated for the prestigious European Yacht of the Year prize. It is highly unusual for two boats from the same yard to be nominees in the same year – and for one to be a sailing yacht (the Contest 42CS) and the other a motoryacht (the Contest 52MC) must surely be unique.

The new Contest 42CS was recently unveiled at the Amsterdam In-water Boat Show and received rave reviews from press and public alike. This should not have come as a surprise as three of the yachts had been sold off plan. The impressive Contest semi-custom build concept appeals to a wide range of potential owners, from experienced sailing families with children to adventurous couples seeking performance and superior comfort.

Created in response to growing demands for a Contest of around 12 metres in length, the Contest 42CS is available in three exterior layout options. The Shorthanded version has a central winch in the cockpit next to the steering wheel from which the mainsail can be operated. Option two is a spacious Cruising layout, with the mainsail traveller located on the cabin roof and the mainsail lines running via a German Mainsheet system to winches in the cockpit. Thirdly, the Performance version has the mainsail traveller recessed in the cockpit floor in front of the helm, maximising speed potential thanks to the optimal mainsail trim.

A wide range of interior options are also on offer with three layouts for the aft and foredeck areas and five for the amidships section of the boat. Key choices include whether to fit four or six sleeping berths, where to locate the galley on the port or starboard side, the size of the owner’s cabin and the amount of storage set aside for sails and the like. This remarkable flexibility, coupled with the unrivalled vacuum technology construction and finely detailed finish for which Contest is renowned, make the Contest 42CS a very special yacht indeed. And the same goes for the second boat nominated, the Contest 52MC.

As the first ever motoryacht to be built by Contest, the 52MC leverages on the yard’s half a century of experience with sailyachts while translating its core values of quality, comfort, performance and design into power boat form. Created with designer Georg Nissen, Vripack Naval Architects and Wetzels Brown Partners (interior), the Contest 52MC is attractive to both former sailyacht owners and committed motoryacht fans.

This innovative motoryacht has many options in terms of layout and technologies. As standard she is fitted with two quiet Cummins Common Rail engines, synchronised with the bow and sternthrusters via an Integrated Docking® system for easy manoeuvring. As Contest owners are not used to the constant sound of engines, the yard invested heavily in engine room insulation and vibration attenuation.

An excellent performance is further assured by the Contest 52MC’s modern halfglider hull, straight bow, long waterline and wide underwater body. The yacht is CE-A certified and meets all requirements for long journeys on inland waterways, coastal areas and the open seas. The design is also focused on safety and comfort, with wide side decks, high bulwarks and a closable cockpit. Available in several versions, flybridge, standard, or a fully open sports model.

The winner of the European Yacht of the Year vote will be announced at Boot Düsseldorf 2014 in January.
